6. Heart-Shaped Breakfast-in-Bed Board

6
This one is made for anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, and new parents who could use a slow morning. A heart-shaped board with a small groove for a juice glass or a jam jar makes breakfast feel like an event.

Materials: a hardwood blank at least ten inches wide, a scroll saw or jigsaw, sandpaper, a router with a core box bit (optional), a small glass jar, and finishing oil.

How to make it: Draw a heart onto paper, fold it in half to check the symmetry, then trace it onto the blank. Cut it out with a scroll saw or jigsaw, taking your time on the inside curves. Sand the edges until they feel rounded and soft — this is where cheap versions give themselves away. If you want a cup holder, rout a shallow circle slightly wider than your jar. Finish with mineral oil and a wax balm.

Time and difficulty: two hours. Beginner with a saw, though tight curves take a steady hand.

Customization: Write a short recipe on a card and tie it to the board. Add a tiny jar of homemade jam or a small packet of good coffee. Burn a date along the bottom edge.
