7. Cheese Board with a Hidden Magnetic Knife Slot

7
A little hidden function makes a gift feel clever. Routing a shallow channel underneath the board and epoxying in a few strong magnets gives the recipient a place to park a cheese knife without hunting through a drawer.

Materials: a thick hardwood board (at least an inch), a router with a straight bit, four to six neodymium magnets, two-part epoxy, thin cork or felt sheet, and finishing oil.

How to make it: On the underside, rout a channel about a quarter inch deep and slightly wider than your magnets. Lay the magnets in a row, checking polarity so they all attract the same way, then epoxy them in and let them cure fully. Cover the channel with a strip of cork or felt so the bottom still sits flat and does not scratch a table. Sand, oil, and wax the top as usual.

Time and difficulty: two hours plus curing. Intermediate.

Customization: Pair it with a nice cheese knife and wrap them together. A darker wood like black walnut hides the bottom hardware nicely. Add a small groove along the edge for crackers.
