9. Chalkboard-Topped Snack Board

This is the crowd-pleaser for families, kids’ birthdays, and anyone who hosts game night. A strip of chalkboard finish along one edge lets you label cheeses, write a menu, or let guests scribble notes.

Materials: a hardwood board, chalkboard paint or a chalkboard decal, painter’s tape, fine sandpaper, and a piece of chalk.

How to make it: Decide on your layout — a horizontal band along the top, a square in one corner, or a framed panel in the middle. Tape off the area cleanly, press the tape edges down firmly, and apply chalkboard paint in thin coats, letting each dry fully. Remove the tape while the final coat is still slightly tacky for the crispest line. Once cured, “season” the surface by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over it and wiping it off. Finish the bare wood with mineral oil.

Time and difficulty: one hour plus drying time. Very beginner-friendly.

Customization: Add a shallow groove for crackers, or a small screw-eye and a loop of twine to hold the chalk. This board also works as a grazing table centerpiece.

Common mistake: Painting over a surface that still has oil on it. Oil and chalkboard paint do not get along, so paint first, oil second, and keep the two areas separate.
